Today would have been my grandparents’ 70th wedding anniversary. My grandfather passed away 2 years ago but they had a love affair that was like no other! Right after they were married my grandfather went off to fight in World War II. One of my most favorite memories of my Poppy is the ‘war stories’ he would tell. I always admired his courage and bravery in everything he did, but especially hearing about him fighting on the front lines. He would tell so many different stories about the battles he was in, the friends that he lost, and even when he shot the sniper right between the eyes…”I got him right here!” he would say so proudly. But no story is better than to hear the one he would tell about my grandmother visiting him in the hospital after he was shot (which he won the purple heart for and ended up fully recovering). He would say how my Nana had to travel alone all the way from Connecticut to his hospital in Ohio which took days back then. When Nana finally arrived at the hospital Poppy said he knew it was her just by the sound of her footsteps coming down the hall. I wasn’t there that day, but I can surely picture the smile on my grandfather’s face when he saw her. True love…..
This is them on their wedding day, September 6, 1941. Are they not the most loveliest, happiest couple you’ve ever seen? She is so beautiful and he is so handsome! Look at that 3 piece suit with the ascot and her full veil and beautiful bouquet. Also notice the guests in the background….the Brits haven’t got anything on these classy hats!!
I often wonder if they knew when they got married how much love they would bring to the world…. 2 children, 4 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren later….their love is still shining bright in our hearts. Happy Anniversary Nan & Pop! Thank you for showing us all what love is.
